Anti-Child Marriage Act author highlights PH part in celebrating International Day of the Girl

A ranking congresswoman has appealed for renewed commitment and collective effort to empower and protect young Filipinas as the Philippines joined the rest of the world in commemorating the International Day of the Girl (IDG). 

House Deputy Minority Leader Bagong Henerasyon Party-list Rep. Bernadette Herrera says the IDG is dedicated to recognizing the immense potential, strength, and resilience of girls worldwide. 

“This day is an opportunity to pay homage to their dreams, aspirations, and the unique contributions they make to our society,” she said in a statement Friday, Oct. 20. 

In light of her role as the author of Republic Act (RA) No.11596 or the Anti-Child Marriage Act, Herrera took a moment to reflect on the strides made in protecting the rights of Filipino girls and securing their promising future. 

She said the enactment of RA No. 11596 last year marked a pivotal milestone in the fight against the enduring practice of child marriage by declaring it illegal, acknowledging it as a form of violence against children. 

“This law not only safeguards the rights of our girls but also empowers them to dream bigger, reach higher, and achieve their goals,” Herrera said. 

“It's a major victory in our ongoing campaign to protect the rights of every child, especially our young girls,” she added. 

Herrera firmly believes that by investing in the education, health, and overall well-being of Filipino girls, “We are securing a brighter and more equitable future for our nation.”
