The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said typhoon Jenny (international name: Koinu) has maintained its strength while traversing the sea east of extreme Northern Luzon on Tuesday morning, Oct. 3.

PAGASA in its 5 a.m. bulletin said Jenny still has maximum sustained winds of 165 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts of up to 205 kph.

The center of the eye of the typhoon was located 350 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes.

Jenny is moving west-northwestward at 15 kph.

It is no longer expected to make landfall in the country, but it is still close enough to bring strong winds and rains to some parts of Northern Luzon in the next few days.

Signal No. 3 ‘likely’ to be raised

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2 remains hoisted over Batanes on Tuesday morning due to the anticipated severe winds.

Meanwhile Signal No. 1 is still in effect over Cagayan, including Babuyan Islands, the northern and eastern portions of Isabela, Apayao, northeastern portion of Abra, northern portion of Kalinga, and Ilocos Norte.

PAGASA warned of potential minor to moderate impacts from gale-force winds in areas under Signal No. 2, and minimal to minor impacts from strong winds in areas under Signal No. 1.

“The most likely highest wind signal that will be hoisted is Wind Signal No. 3,” it pointed out.

Heavy rains due to Jenny, ‘habagat’

PAGASA said typhoon Jenny may bring moderate to heavy rains (50 to 100 millimeters) over Batanes and Babuyan Islands on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, Oct. 4, Batanes will experience heavy to intense rains (100 to 200 millimeters), while Babuyan Islands and the northern part of Ilocos Norte will experience moderate to heavy rains.

The typhoon-enhanced southwest monsoon, or “habagat,” may also bring occasional rains over the western portions of Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, and Visayas in the next three days.

Jenny may exit the Philippine area of responsibility on Thursday, Oct. 5.
