Measles cases in PH climb up --- DOH

  • The DOH has observed a sharp increase in measles cases in the Philippines during the year 2023.
  • DOH data showed there were 1,179 recorded cases of measles from Jan. 1 to Aug. 26, 2023 --- a substantial increase from the 371 cases reported in 2022.

The Department of Health (DOH) saw a sharp increase in measles cases in the country this year. 

Based on the Epidemic-prone Disease Case Surveillance (EDCS) Weekly Report posted on its website, the DOH reported there were 1,179 measles cases recorded from Jan. 1 to Aug. 26, 2023.

From 371 cases in 2022, DOH said measles cases spiked 218 percent this year. 

Meanwhile, data from DOH also showed that the Philippines logged four fatalities from measles in 2023 compared to one recorded death in 2022.

The region with the highest number of recorded cases is Region III (Central Luzon) with 188 cases this year from 28 cases last year which showed a 571-percent significant increase.

Meanwhile, the regions where highest increases from 2022 to 2023 were observed include the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) with 1,500 percent increase or from one to 16 cases; SOCCSKSARGEN (South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, General Santos) with 1,067 percent increase or from nine to 105 cases; and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) with 767 percent or from 18 to 156 cases. (Lizst Torres Abello)
