What does it take to be a Gringo, “cashiered colonel” and coup leader, former senator, former secretary of Information and Communications Technology, to look so good after these many years?
Gringo Honasan, who should be in his ‘70s but doesn’t look it, replied with a broad smile as he framed his cheeks with both hands, “If you’re referring to this pinkish blush, it’s courtesy of Jane, who slapped me for coming home late.”
And why would Jane hurt her hand like that!? Only husbands who aren’t afraid of their wives would spin such an outlandish tale! What is true is that Gringo exudes health, energy, and positive vibes, attributing the feel-good, look-good syndrome to one’s “outlook in life.” Tiffany, the famous python, continues to thrive as his pet. He reads books, including the heavy stuff, and keeps in shape even without the ring finger on his left hand which he lost during a daring escape long ago.
Which doesn’t mean that all is 100-percent well as far as the national conversation is concerned. Happy Husband Honasan’s view is that with change happening at such a dizzying pace, aided in part by technology, the people should keep pace and work – very hard. Not that the 2025 elections will be a walk in the park, but if it’s going to be the same old story of cheating, buying and selling votes... Will he be a candidate? “But I’m already president! Of our homeowners association.”
Another member of the family, his sister Alya, journalist and writer, is herself working hard to finish the book she’s writing about his role in RAM, or Reform the Armed Forces Movement, which was a dramatic point in the history of the Armed Forces of the Philippines during the mid-‘80s. Are today’s soldiers anything like the troops and officers of those tumultuous days of political tension, social unrest, rallies and protest movements that divided even families and turned friends into foes?
Before Gringo could reply, his friend who’s a civilian and lawyer turned the tables on me: “What about you in media? How often have you people spoken up to say a good word about our soldiers who die protecting their country, sacrificing themselves for love of country?”
