Gomez bags WBC-Asia silver bantam crown in Thailand


BACOLOD CITY – Herlan Gomez won the World Boxing Council-Asian Boxing Council (WBC-Asia) silver bantamweight title in Bangkok, Thailand  via a first round knockout last week.

The E.B. Magalona, Negros Occidental native, who is also the reigning Asian Boxing Federation (ABF) bantamweight champion, beat IBF-Asia champion Komgrich Nantapech of Udon Thani, Thailand in their featured match at Highland Boxing Show at the Spaceplus Bangkok in RCA Plaza on September 28.

His coaches were Jomar Fajardo, Frank Jaro, Supanat Chanram, and Brico Langbay Santig.

Gomez thanked the local government for the financial support and the people of E. B. Magalona for their prayers and moral support in this particular bout and all his other matches.

Mayor Marvin Malacon lauded Gomez who hails from Barangay Madalag.

"Your hard work, passion, and grit to excel in your sports, and your fiercely patriotic desire to bring pride and honor to your hometown and to the whole country are awe-inspiring," Malacon said in a statement.

"Our hearts swell with pride as we share the news of your recent victory as we always do in your previous wins. Thank you for giving us more reasons to celebrate the Saraviahanon athlete," the mayor added.

Gomez impressed boxing promoters and fans in his non-title fight in Dubai, United Arab Emirates with a first round KO win on August 26.

He had four consecutive KO wins in Bangkok. His record now stands at 11 wins and one loss with eight KOs.
