House Deputy Minority Leader and Basilan Rep. Mujiv Hataman expects the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to increase the 2024 Marawi compensation fund to P5 billion.
Originally earmarked in proposed 2024 national budget as P1-billion fund, Hataman noted that an increased budget would greatly benefit victims of the 2017 Marawi Siege.
(This is a huge victory for the victims of Marawi Siege who waited more than six years for their damaged homes to be rebuilt.)
The lawmaker said only five years are given to the Marawi Compensation Board (MCB) to complete its reimbursement; as such, a P1-billion fund for one year won't suffice for the restoration plans.
The MCB, which oversees the compensation for owners of properties damaged during the five-month long conflict, noted that it received a total of 4,762 filed claimants from July 4 to Aug. 3 of this year.
This roughly amounts to P17.46 billion in just two months.
At the meantime, Hataman said that DBM is already committed in releasing P1 billion in the second week of October for 362 claimants.
(It's not enough, but at least we know that the Marawi Compensation Program is rolling. This will give hope to those who filed verified claims that it is no longer a question of whether or not they will be paid, but only a question of when.)
(And if the fund can be increased to P5 billion, more people will be blessed next year. More people will be able to build their homes. Just a little more patience and we can return to normal in Marawi.)
