Criminology student received 60 paddle hits during initiation rites - QCPD
Quezon City Police District (QCPD) Director Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan said on Thursday, Oct. 19, that Ahldryn Leary Bravante, the criminology student who died after sustaining hazing injuries from a fraternity’s initiation rites on Monday, Oct. 16, reportedly received more or less 60 paddle hits from the fraternity members.
The QPCD said that the victim was allegedly hit with a paddle by the 16 identified fraternity members present during the initiation rites held beside an abandoned building of a condominium in Barangay Sto. Domingo, Quezon City at around 2 p.m. on Monday.
"Patuloy ang QCPD na nananawagan sa lahat ng sangkot sa insidenteng ito, lalo sa 11 na napangalanan na at sa iba pang sangkot na tinutukoy pa ang pagkakakilanlan, sumuko na kayo para matulungan ang pamilya na mabigyan ng katarungan ang pagkasawi ng kanilang anak. Hindi titigil ang ating kapulisan hanggang kayo ay mahuli at mapanagot sa krimen na inyong nagawa (The QCPD continues to call on all those involved in this incident, especially the 11 who have been named and the others whose identity is still being determined, to surrender, to help the family get justice for their son's death. Our police will not stop until you are caught and held accountable for the crime you have committed),” Maranan said.

Maranan said that Bravante, 25, a 4th year criminology student from the Philippine College of Criminology (PCCR) sustained trauma on his lower extremities (both legs/thighs) after the initiation rites.
Police had earlier said that a cursory examination revealed the victim sustained hematoma on both of his legs, as well as burned cigarette marks on his chest and both hands.
QCPD added that they are still waiting for the results of the autopsy conducted on Bravante’s body to determine the cause of his death.
On Monday afternoon, Bravente was rushed by two men in the Chinese General Hospital in Manila after he experienced difficulty in breathing and became unconscious. He was declared dead on arrival.
The two men, identified as Justine Artatez Cantillo, 25, and Kyle Cordeta De Castro, 21, were brought to the QCPD by Manila Police District after they revealed that they were members of the Tau Gamma Phi Fraternity - PCCR Chapter. They added Bravante underwent initiation rites being a “neophyte” of the brotherhood.
On Tuesday, Oct. 17, two other members of the group - Mark Leo Andales and Lexer Angelo Manarpies - surrendered to the QCPD.
John Xavier Clidoro Arcosa, a fraternity member who was allegedly present during the initiation, was assisted by his parents as he turned himself in to the authorities on Wednesday, Oct. 18, police said.
QCPD said that Cantillo and De Castro executed an extrajudicial confession on Wednesday, admitting that they were part of the initiation rights, and revealing the names and addresses of 11 other fraternity members present during the incident.
The city police launched a manhunt operation to arrest the 11 remaining suspects involved in Bravante’s death.
The local police also said it filed charges for violation of Republic Act (RA) 11053 (Anti-Hazing Act of 2018) against all the 16 suspects (11 at-large and 5 under their custody) before the QC Prosecutors Office.
The suspects were also charged with robbery after the police learned that some of Bravante’s personal belongings went missing after the incident.
