The Heavy Bombers poured everything on the table to edge out the Pirates, 88-87, in the NCAA Season 99 men’s basketball tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 17, at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.
Victory wouldn't be completed after two extensions if not for the players' trust to each other and the courage to slay the once untouchable Lyceum.
“We all know that we're going to come up as winners kasi from the start palang ang preach ng coaching staffs sa’min is always to believe in each other,” said JRU assistant coach Alex Callueng.
“Maglaro kayo, magsama-sama kayo, matalo [man] talo magkakasama [pa rin] tayo,” he added.
Callueng also reiterated that they just let the Bombers play, but knew that the dribblers should follow the system.
“Laruin nyo lang, gawin niyo lang ang tama, gawin at sundin niyo lang ang sistema. You learn from it, we encourage the kids to do so, kasi they'll never learn kung papagalitan naman sila ng sobra,” Callueng continued.
“Sa practice do’n kami maguusap about the smallest mistakes that they’ve done,”
Joshua Guiab, who topscored the Mandaluyong-based squad with 18 points including key baskets in the waning minutes, underscored the importance of sticking to their game plan.
“Nagstick lang kami do’n sa sistema ni coach (Louie Gonzales) di kami umalis kahit anong mangyari,” Guiab said.
Jonathan Medina expressed the same thought on their triumph over the Pirates.
“Sumunod lang kami sa coach at naniwala kami sa isa’t isa,” Medina concluded.
JRU climbed up in the ladder at 5-3 to fourth place behind Lyceum (6-3), San Beda (5-2) and Mapua (6-1). The Heavy Bombers will play the Arellano Chiefs (1-6) for their last game in the first round on Saturday, Oct. 21.
