KOICA, UNESCO Jakarta and DepEd celebrate the milestones of the Better Life Project

The Korean Government, through the Korea International Cooperation Agency, joins UNESCO Jakarta and the Department of Education in celebrating the milestones of the Better Life for Out-of-School Girls to Fight Against Poverty and Injustice in the Philippines project on 06 October 2023 at Dusit Thani Hotel, Makati City.

The Grand Ceremony of UNESCO-DepEd-KOICA Cooperation Project celebrates the successful cooperation of the three agencies in strengthening the Alternative Learning System (ALS) Program and the support to girls’ education in the country, particularly in Region 8. Partners and stakeholders took part in the celebration and recognized the achievements, success stories and contribution of the project to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4 on quality inclusive education and lifelong learning and transforming the lives of all girls for a brighter future.

The said event was graced by Ambassador LEE Sang-hwa of the Republic of Korea to the Philippines, KOICA Country Director Mr. KIM Eunsub, DepEd Assistant Secretary Dr. Alma Ruby Torio, Director and Representative of UNESCO Multisectoral Regional Office in Jakarta Ms. Maki Katsuno-Hayashikawa, and United Nations Resident Coordinator in the Philippines Mr. Gustavo Gonzales. Also in attendance were other DepEd officials and staff, representatives from international and national government agencies, and ALS teachers and learners.

This USD 6.1 Million project supported by KOICA with UNESCO Jakarta and DepEd aims to improve the quality of life for girls living in poverty in Tacloban City and nearby municipalities in Leyte. The project’s primary target beneficiaries are out-of-school-girls registered in the ALS Program for further education and job opportunities. The project, which was implemented from 2017, is set to be completed in December 2023.
