Every October, the world is dressed in pink to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s a time to celebrate the survivors, remember those we’ve lost, and raise vital funds for research and support. But while October is a designated month for this important cause, the awareness should extend far beyond those 31 days.

Breast health is a lifelong commitment, a year-round journey that each one of us, regardless of gender, should embark on. Regular self-exams, clinical check-ups, and a proactive approach to maintaining breast health are essential practices. It's not just about awareness. It’s about fostering a lifestyle of vigilance and care. All these things, I’ve always known, yet I still struggle to truly get into them. This is something I admitted as I hosted the panel discussion for Crimson Hotel’s Passionately Pink launch.

The panelists included core members of StageZero by Project Pink Support Group Inc.: Melissa de Leon Joseph, Joy Trinidad, and Mel Aguasin. Also in attendance was Breast Center head for  AsianHospital and the Medical City’s Dr. Aldine Basa, and Pinky Tobiano—mother, cancer conqueror, chemist, and philanthropist. The compelling discussion went from inspiring stories of overcoming cancer and discussing medical advancements in treatments to highlighting the significance of patient and family support groups.

PASSIONATELY PINK Crimson Hotel partners with StageZero for the seventh year to help raise breast cancer awareness

The partnership between Crimson Filinvest and StageZero started seven years ago, continuing to this day, when it has expanded to the other Chroma Hospitality properties across the Philippines. Part of the proceeds of “pink” offerings, from hotel stay packages to F&B options, goes to StageZero to support their cause.

“We believe that hospitality goes beyond what’s expected. Today, our hotel resonates with purpose and a shared commitment to breast cancer awareness,” said general manager Arlene Tongco. “This month of pink ribbons and heartfelt advocacy, Crimson is not just a hotel—it has become a venue for compassion and connection.”

The Estée Lauder Companies here in the Philippines is also in on raising awareness. Now on its 31st Breast Cancer campaign, it is collaborating with SM Cares. Throughout October, prominent landmarks such as the SM Mall of Asia Globe, SM Lanang Fountain, the Time Sculpture at SM Megamall, and Megaworld Uptown Bonifaciois illuminated in pink, displaying campaign messages to raise awareness.

The campaign also organized free clinical breast examinations, thanks to the assistance of medical experts from St. Luke’s Medical Center. Additionally, wellness talks were hosted for breast cancer survivors in collaboration with the Kasuso Foundation, ICanServe Foundation, and Helping Women and Others, featuring guest speakers Dr. Bernice Navarro, Susan Afan, and Dr. Lourdes Gozali, who generously shared their insights and experiences.

Partner doctors will conduct educational talks focusing on prevention and early detection for all ELC and business partner employees, as part of the Breast Cancer Campaign Education Roadshow.

In the Philippines, breast cancer is the third highest cause of death among women. Let’s all do our part in raising awareness and being alert enough to catch the disease as early as possible.

A month of national days

On to something brighter, October is a month of national days so expect me to do a few roundups until the month ends. This month began with Germany and Korea hosting their national day events, the first ones of their newly arrived ambassadors.

“It is a privilege to celebrate with you today, the 33rd anniversary of the reunification of Germany, and the strong and enduring ties between our two countries, as well as the shared values of democracy, freedom, and the rule of law that unite us,” said German Ambassador Dr. Andreas Pfaffernoschke at the event he and his team hosted at the Raffles in Makati. During his speech, he recounted his personal experience on the night the Berlin Wall fell. He had just submitted his application for the foreign service and was having a beer with a friend, discussing politics. In an era pre-smartphones, they only found out about the huge development the next day. He recounted how it was a hopeful time that made them believe in peace.

“In light of the upcoming 70th anniversary of our diplomatic relations next year, we reflect on the achievements of our partnerships and let them guide us to more fruitful and dynamic collaboration in the years to come,” DFA undersecretary Charles Jose expressed during his turn for a toast. “A friendship of 70 years is quite a significant achievement, in and of itself, marked by commitment and hard work from both sides. Germany has time and again proven itself as a staunch advocate and reliable allies in the promotion of a rules-based order in the Indo Pacific region.”

The South Korean Embassy, meanwhile, celebrated Gaecheonjeol or the National Foundation Day of Korea and Armed Forces Day at the Grand Hyatt. It’s also Ambassador Lee Sang-hwa’s first in Manila after arriving in July.

The third of October is celebrated as the foundation of Korea’s first ancient kingdom and the beginning of its vibrant history. In a statement, the embassy said, “Together with Filipino friends and partners, the event stood as a symbolic take on the ever-deepening amity and cooperation between Korea and the Philippines. Maraming salamat po!”

The friendship between the two countries run deep with the Philippines being the first Asian country to respond to the United Nations’ call to help South Korea, sending over 7,000 troops during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953.
