The Iloilo Business Club (IBC), the Iloilo Economic Development Foundation Inc. (ILED), the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI-Iloilo Chapter), and the Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Iloilo Inc. (FCCCII) have asked the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), an attached agency of the DOTr, to expedite the process on the expansion of the Iloilo Airport.
“The Iloilo Business Club has long supported any expeditious action on improvements, expansion, or privatization of the Iloilo Airport to upgrade its facilities to global standards,” said Maria Luisa “Marissa” Segovia, IBC vice president.
“It is not only for comfort and convenience, but as a stamp of excellence in our bid to continue our investment growth, in support of MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions, conferences, exhibitions, and events), tourism, and being a future retirement haven,” added Segovia, co-chairperson of the Infrastructure Development Committee (IDC) of the Regional Development Council (RDC)-6.
Treñas, co-chairperson of the RDC-6 IDC, had earlier said that resolutions have been made urging the inclusion of the Iloilo Airport expansion in the DOTr budget for 2024.
Defensor had earlier disclosed that CAAP is still reviewing unsolicited proposals by Aboitiz InfraCapital Inc. and Prime Asset Venture Inc.
The ILED and the FCCCII emphasized the critical need for upgrades via public-private partnership (PPP) to ensure sustainable and world-class services at the Iloilo Airport.
Terence Uygongco, ILED chairperson and FCCCII president, said the PPP mode can maximize resources and expertise the needed upgrade and maintenance of the airport.
“The urgent attention to this appeal will surely catalyze increased investment, business growth, employment, and tourism for Iloilo and our neighboring provinces,” added PCCI-Iloilo in a statement signed by its president Fulbert Woo.
The airport that straddles between the towns of Santa Barbara and Cabatuan opened in 2007 when the airport in Iloilo City was closed.
When it was built, the airport was designed to only cater to 1.2 million passengers per year. Prior to the pandemic, the airport was serving 2.4 million passengers per year.
