ASEAN, GCC leaders likely to raise Israel-Hamas war in summit

Countries from Southeast Asia and some from the Middle East are expected to talk about the ongoing war between the Israeli government and Hamas militants during their first-ever leaders summit late this week.

Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Assistant Secretary Daniel Espiritu said Monday that leaders from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) will "discuss regional and international issues" during the ASEAN-GCC Summit on Oct. 20.

Issues will "definitely" include "the current developments in the Middle East," according to Espiritu.

GCC countries Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman are not involved in the war between Israel, their fellow Middle Eastern country, and Hamas, a group that currently governs another Middle Eastern country, Palestine.

Therefore, Espiritu said, "probably the discussion will dwell on generalities on this."

UAE and Bahrain, with which Israel has diplomatic relations through the Abraham Accords, recently issued their respective statements denouncing Hamas' attacks.

Meanwhile, Saudi, Kuwait, Qatar and Oman either expressed their concern on the conflict that already affected civilians' lives or pinned the blame on Israel for its supposed violation of rights of the Palestinians.
