QC's calamity monitoring system cited in 'Galing Pook' awards


The Quezon City government's monitoring system that gives warning to the city residents during calamities was recognized during 2023 Galing Pook Awards on Thursday, Oct. 12.

Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte and QC Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (QCDRRMO) Officer-in-charge Maria Bianca Perez received the "2023 Galing Pook Awardee" plaque for the Intelligent, Resilient and Integrated Systems for the Urban Population (iRISE UP) from Secretary of the Interior and Local Government (SILG) Benhur Abalos at former SILG Mel Sarmiento.

The event was held at One Esplanade, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City.

According to the city government, iRISE UP  aims to empower the QC community with innovative tools and applications to elevate local disaster risk reduction efforts and nurture climate change awareness.

It added that the real-time monitoring system gives warning to the community for calamities like rain, water level of rivers,and earthquakes, as well as air quality, using early warning devices. An iRISE UP application can be installed by coty residents on their mobile phones.

Galing Pook Awards, spearheaded by the Galing Pook Foundation and launched in Oct. 21, 1993, searches and recognizes different innovative practices by local government units in the countiy that will help their communities (according to galing pook.org).

The awardees were chosen from a national search of local governance programs, evaluated through a multilevel rigorous screening process based on positive results and impact, promotion of people’s participation and empowerment, innovation and adaptation, resilience, sustainability, and efficiency of program service delivery and transferability.

This year, 17 (including iRise Up) out of  166  local government initiatives nitiatives were chosen as finalists for the  awards

The QC Birth Registration Online (QC BRO) that makes birth registration of children born in city  hospitals and lying in clinics also made it to the list of 2023 Galing Pook Awards finalists.
