Jake Figueroa showed nerves of steel as National University eked out an 80-77 overtime victory over De La Salle in the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament on Sunday, Oct. 15, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The Bulldogs side delivered a balanced effort led by Figueroa’s double-double performance of 15 points and 10 rebounds on a decent 4-of-8 shooting, while Jolo Manansala finished with 13 points to help the Sampaloc-based squad climb to a 4-1 record for the solo second spot.
Pat Yu and Omar John contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Neither squads could entirely pull away from each other in regulation and engaged in a telling nip-and-tuck affair through the match.
John opened the scoring in the fourth period on a layup which broke the deadlock, 54-52.
CJ Austria then responded right away with a triple, but NU stayed ahead after John’s slam which gave the Bulldogs a 62-57 advantage, with 4:54 left in regulation.
The Green Archers refused to back down, though, as Kevin Quiambao launched a three-pointer to pull La Salle within two, 62-60.
Evan Nelle then was sent to the line but split his free throws as La Salle continued to trail by one.
Nelle, who was evidently struggling, drove to the basket before Mike Phillips made two of his free throws to give the Green Archers a three-point lead, 64-67.
However, Figueroa fired the game-tying triple with 48 seconds left to go.
Phillips, who could have iced the game from the line, missed both free throws this time which extended the match.
Tied at 69-all in overtime, Yu broke NU out of the final deadlock of the match with five straight points, 75-69.
With less than 10 seconds left, Nelle unleashed a three-pointer, only his third field goal of the match to give La Salle a glimmer of hope, 79-77.
However, Kean Baclaan found himself on the line on a loose ball foul and made one of his free throws as the win was sealed for good.
“Wala kaming pakielam sa mga standing na iyan eh. And pakielam kasi namin how they performed. Lalo na nung we lost agisnt UP. Pinaka concern ko kasi coming to our big games, we have to be competitive, ‘yong A-game and the usual approach namin luamabas para ma-turn arund ‘yong sitwasyon na gusto namin. Naka-tsamba kami kasi La Salle is very strong talaga,” NU head coach Jeff Napa.
Quiambao led all scorers with a season-high 25 points and even flirted with a double-double showing after tallying nine rebounds.
La Salle slid 3-2 in the standings.
