Evan Nelle and Kevin Quiambao joined hands as De La Salle breezed past Adamson, 71-58, in the first round of the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The Green Archers awoke from their slumber and exploded in the third quarter to improve 3-1 and join National University Bulldogs atop the standings.

Graduating guard Nelle delivered a double-double outing of 12 points and 15 rebounds including five assists, while Quiambao fired an equally impressive performance of 17 points and 10 rebounds to go along with six assists.
Mike Phillips, for his part, stepped up just as much with 14 points.
From down 35-38 in the second period, La Salle blasted Adamson with a 20-0 run for a telling 58-38 lead in the third.
Though the Soaring Falcons managed to drill in back-to-back triples to help their cause, the Green Archers continued to widen the gap with a huge 61-44 advantage heading into the payoff period.
As if the beating wasn’t enough, La Salle unleashed another 8-3 run to tally its biggest lead of the match, 71-47.
Adamson’s last-minute efforts went nowhere as the gap was too big to close in on.
“It was really a challenging game for us as they came with a lot of confidence after their last game. We just have to make sure we’re gonna come out also knowing this is important and playing Adamson was big for us,” said La Salle head coach Topex Robinson.
Arthur Calisay and Matt Erolon paced the Soaring Falcons with 12 and 10 points, respectively, as Adamson absorbed an even record of 2-2 still sans Jerom Lastimosa.
Meanwhile, in the earlier play, NU bounced back in convincing fashion against the still winless University of Santo Tomas, 87-69.
NU hiked its streak to three wins against one loss thanks to the squad’s balanced effort.
Four Bulldogs reached the double-digit mark, with Mike Malonzo and Jolo Manansala finishing with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
On the other hand, the Growling Tigers are off to their worst start of 0-4 just like last season and continued to slide in 17 games owing their losses from last year.
Christian Manaytay showed the way for UST with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Nic Cabanero had 16 points.
