House Speaker Martin Romualdez announced Saturday, Oct. 14 that he would give P500,000 as assistance to the family of the third Filipino fatality in the ongoing violence in the Middle East, particularly between Israeli forces and Hamas rebel fighters.
This brings up to P1.5 million the combined assistance pledge made by Speaker Romualdez and his wife, Tingog Party-list Rep. Yedda Marie Romualdez in connection with the death of Filipinos amid the Israel-Hamas conflict.
The Speaker, in a statement Saturday, said it was worth mentioning that all three victims "were dedicated caregivers, whose lives were cut short by the devastating conflict".
The first two victims include a 42-year-old man from Pampanga, who was apprehended by Hamas militants; and a 33-year-old woman from Pangasinan, who lost her life alongside her employer.
The Romualdez couple promised P1 million as assistance to the victims' families.
The third victim was a 49-year-old Filipina hailing from Negros Occidental, who was attending a music festival near the Gaza-Israel border when it was targeted by Hamas militants on Oct. 7.
That day, the Hamas sent thousands of rockets flying into Israel.
In addition to financial aid, Speaker Romualdez is determined to help grieving families in other ways.
He said that he was looking for possible job opportunities and scholarships for the families so they may rebuild their lives faster.
The P1.5 million will come from the Romauldez couple's personal funds.
