Showbiz has been his niche ever since, as he worked as a commercial model and actor for 18 years, from 1994 up to 2012. His acting career granted him roles that made him a familiar face in Philippine television, appearing in iconic series like Daisy Siyete, Angelito: Batang Ama, and Wildflower.

Recovering and dusting off the showbiz mantle he used to wear in the 90s, Matthew Mendoza finds his way back into acting. Spending almost a decade in his role as a public servant in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, had been a great experience for the actor, but he knows that he will always belong on the screen.
Winning and securing the top rank in the 2013 elections in Puerto Princesa was an overwhelming and grateful experience for the returning actor. However, the responsibilities of being a politician weighed heavier then, so he decided to take some time off showbiz to be more hands-on in his newly-found role.
"It was a very new experience for me and I enjoyed it a lot, I learned many new things and met many wonderful people. I also feel good that I could give back to my city and continue our family legacy of service," he said.
He first won as a city councilor of Puerto Princesa in 2013, was re-elected in 2016, and served for a third term in 2019. Concurrently, he was elected by the Philippine Councilors League as the Public Relations Officer for Luzon Island in 2016 and as the Vice-President in 2019.
During his tenure, he delved into his humanitarian side, a passion he always wanted to nurture. He chaired various committees, notably focusing on Tourism and Infrastructure. Matthew seized the opportunity to assist the Mayor in addressing diverse infrastructure needs for the residents of Puerto Princesa City. His unwavering dedication drove him to author crucial legislation addressing various concerns in Puerto Princesa's main industries.
Consistent with his advocacy even before entering politics, he spearheaded numerous initiatives for people with special needs. He staunchly advocates for inclusivity and has tirelessly sought ways to support them both within and beyond the realm of politics.
His inherent understanding of politics was no surprise, given his lineage of personalities deeply entrenched in political roots. The Mendoza family has a rich legacy of serving Palawan over generations. His grandfather, Higinio Mendoza Sr., was a Palawan Governor and a guerrilla leader during World War 2, commemorated along the streets of Puerto Princesa.
Furthermore, his father served as City Councilor, Vice Mayor, and Mayor of Puerto Princesa City. Various members of his family have also held significant roles in serving Puerto Princesa and Palawan.
While it's not uncommon for actors to transition into politics, excelling in both realms is a rarity. Mendoza takes pride in his accomplishments in both.
"There is no comparison, the two are completely different. In government service, malaking responsibilidad ang iginawad ng taong bayan para maserbisyohan sa araw araw na pamumuhay.
Sa showbiz, after acting or performing on stage or screen, you hope the people are entertained. that's the responsibility, to be professional and to give what they are looking for, may it be fun or not," he said.
Although he took some time off, he never saw himself detached from showbiz and doesn't anticipate struggling to reenter the burgeoning realm of new actors and actresses.
"I don't think there is a big transition as I have never really stopped, only slowed down. My emotional support has always been my family. I know they are there to support me in whatever I do, and I feel a sense of security because of this. My family is my safe space."
To him, the appeal of his comeback lies in the challenge of embracing new roles and collaborating with exceptional individuals, aspects he missed most during his time entirely devoted to acting.
"I find the transformation and new things to be very exciting. I find that being open to change and new stuff always helps. My Kids help me a lot with the new changes; they keep me young," he said.
Looking back on his strenuous years navigating the complexities of both politics and entertainment, he reflects on the valuable lessons he gained. He eagerly anticipates incorporating these lessons into his return as an actor.
"I think it is not only the complexities of politics or show business but it's the complexities of life that I am still navigating. I think we will never stop. My guide is always integrity and empathy. In the entertainment industry, I wish to entertain people. "
