Malacañang's failure to list Feb. 25 as a regular public holiday in 2024 didn't sit well with Liberal Party (LP) President Albay 1st district Rep. Edcel Lagman.
"The inordinate arrogance of the second Marcos administration in failing to celebrate Feb. 25 as a regular public holiday is a continuing distortion of the verities about the evils and repression of the Marcos martial era," Lagman said in a statement Saturday, Oct. 14.
"Feb. 25 commemorates the Filipino people’s success in ousting the dictator Marcos, who had to eventually flee to Hawaii where he was in virtual captivity until his death in Honolulu on 28 September 1989," he recalled.
The Palace's basic explanation for Feb. 25's non-inclusion in the list of holidays is the date's falling on a Sunday.
Incumbent President Marcos is the son of the late strongman president Ferdinand Marcos Sr.
"Ever since the Philippines has marked Feb. 25 as a day of national celebration, irrespective of whether or not it falls on a Sunday," underscored Lagman.
"The more Marcos Jr. would sweep under the rug of historical perfidy the profligacy and oppression of his father’s dictatorship, the more unreachable reconciliation and justice will be," he further said.
Lagman is a self-styled independent minority congressman in the House of Representatives.
