After 24 years, Cameron Mackintosh's revival of “Miss Saigon" will take the stage at The Theatre at Solaire in March 2024. This is also the same production that premiered on Broadway in 2017 and recently played at the Sydney Opera House.
"Cameron Mackintosh's brand new production of Miss Saigon lands at the Theatre at Solaire this March 2024. Stay tuned for more announcements!" GMG Productions tweeted on Oct. 13. GMG Productions and GWB Entertainment will co-produce Miss Saigon in Manila in 2024.
“I’m thrilled to bring my spectacular new production of ‘Miss Saigon’ to Manila. It’s the best production of the show I’ve ever produced, with one of the most brilliant casts that have ever performed the show worldwide," said Mackintosh. “I can’t envisage another show of this scale being done in Manila for the foreseeable future."
GMG Productions CEO Carlos Candal said: "Filipinos have a deep connection with ‘Miss Saigon’ because it has been the stage where many Filipino artists have had their moment to shine, such as Lea Salonga, Jon Jon Briones, Joanna Ampil. Rachelle Ann Go, and countless others who showcased their extraordinary skills and passion."
The last time "Miss Saigon" was brought to Manila was in 2000 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. It was there where many local theatergoers saw Tony winner Lea Salonga playing the tragic heroine, Kim, for the first time.
Salonga, then 18, rose to international fame when she won the lead role of Kim in "Miss Saigon" in the West End. She won several awards, including the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical, in 1991. Salonga made history as the first Asian to receive a prestigious acting award from the Tonys.
"Miss Saigon" premiered in London in September 1989. Then it opened on Broadway in April 1991.
“Miss Saigon” features music by Claude-Michel Schonberg, with lyrics by Richard Maltby Jr. and Alan Boublil, adapted from the original French lyrics by Boublil. It also has additional new lyrics by Michael Mahler, according to broadway.world.com.
