Magnitude 5 quake jolts Batangas — Phivolcs

A 5.0-magnitude earthquake jolted Batangas on Friday morning, Oct. 13, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs said the quake struck 15 kilometers southwest of Calaca, Batangas at 8:24 a.m.

It occurred at a shallow depth of 6 kilometers beneath the epicenter.

Phivolcs said the quake was felt at Intensity V (strong) in Batangas City, Calaca City, and Lemery in Batangas.

It was also felt at Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Alitagtag, Balayan, Bauan, Calatagan, Lian, Mabini, Mataasnakahoy, San Luis, Sta. Teresita, Taal, Tingloy, and Tuy in Batangas; Alfonso, Cavite; and Muntinlupa City, Metro Manila.

The quake was “weak” at Intensity III in Agoncillo, Balete, Cuenca, Ibaan, Laurel, Lipa City, Lobo, Malvar, Nasugbu, Padre Garcia, San Jose, San Nicolas, San Pascual, City of Sto. Tomas, Talisay, Tanauan City, and Taysan in Batangas; Amadeo, Dasmariñas City, 
Indang, Magallanes, Mendez-Nuñez, Silang, and Tagaytay City in Cavite; San Pedro, Laguna; and Dolores and Tiaong in Quezon.

Meanwhile, the quake was “slightly felt” at Intensity II in Pateros, Quezon City, Valenzuela City, and Pasay City in Metro Manila; Obando and Meycauayan City in Bulacan; Rosario, Batangas; Bacoor City and General Trias City in Cavite; San Pablo City, Laguna; and Mauban, Quezon.

It was “scarcely perceptible” at Intensity I in Caloocan City and Pasig City in Metro Manila; Naic, Cavite; Cardona and Morong in Rizal; Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro; and San Juan, Batangas.

Phivolcs’ instruments also recorded the quake at Intensity IV in Cuenca, Bauan, Sta. Teresita, and San Luis in Batangas; Muntinlupa City, Metro Manila, and Tagaytay City, Cavite; Intensity III in Laurel and Batangas City in Batangas and Dolores, Quezon; Intensity II in Talisay and Rosario in Batangas, Magallanes in Cavite, Boac in Marinduque, Las Piñas City and Pasay City in Metro Manila, Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro, Mauban, Polillo, and Gumaca in Quezon, and Taytay and Antipolo City in Rizal; and Intensity I in Malvar in Batangas, Malolos City and Guiguinto in Bulacan, Ternate in Cavite, San Pablo in Laguna, Malabon City, San Juan City, Parañaque City, and Pateros in Metro Manila, Abra De Ilog and Mamburao in Occidental Mindoro, Lucena City, Alabat, and Lucban in Quezon, Tanay in Rizal, and Dinalupihan in Bataan.

Phivolcs said there may have been damage caused by the earthquake and warned the public about potential aftershocks.
