House Committee on Overseas Workers Affairs Chairman Kabayan Party-list Rep. Ron Salo joined the family of Saudi Arabia-based overseas Filipino worker (OFW) Marjorette Garcia in receiving her remains at the International Cargo Terminal, Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on Friday, Oct. 13.
“I expressed my heartfelt condolences to the family of Marjorette Garcia during this incredibly difficult time. The family of Marjorette was so devastated upon seeing her casket. It was a heartbreaking sight,” Salo said in a statement.
Through the assistance of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Region 1 Office, Garcia’s mother, husband, and siblings travelled from Pangasinan to Manila to personally receive the body.
Garcia's remains will be transported to her hometown in San Jacinto, Pangasinan, where she will be given a hero’s welcome.
“She dedicated her life working in a foreign land to support her family. She established great relations with her employer and represented the Filipino people with utmost dignity and outstanding character befitting of a modern day hero,” said Salo.
“The tragic loss of a fellow Filipino, away from her loved ones as she dedicated her life working overseas, deeply saddens us. We want to assure her family and the public that the Philippine authorities will ensure that justice will be served on her perpetrator,” he added.
The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) had earlier said that the investigation into Garcia's death was underway.--Dexter Barro II
