Did you know? Victoria Beckham was once spotted carrying a knock-off Louis Vuitton bag

The moment led her to become friends with then creative director of the brand Marc Jacobs

There is no doubt that Victoria Beckham is a true style icon. From her time as Posh Spice to becoming the designer of her namesake brand, she has gifted everyone with style inspirations in more ways than one. We can get a glimpse of that and other aspects of her life on Netflix’s “Beckham” documentary series. But before she set out to create collections for fashion weeks,  would you believe that was the singer-turned-designer spotted carrying a counterfeit Louis Vuitton bag?

According to then-creative director of Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, Victoria was photographed with the brand’s graffiti bag in collaboration with American fashion designer and artist Stephen Sprouse in 2001. In an interview with WWD, the designer confirmed that the piece she had was fake.

“When we did the graffiti bags with Stephen Sprouse there was a cover of a British newspaper with Posh Spice wearing a counterfeit one,” Marc said as reported by British Vogue. “As soon as it was produced, we sent her a real one. I hardly dreamed that my ultimate goal would be to have Posh Spice carrying a Louis Vuitton handbag. It was kind of funny.”

From that moment, Marc and Victoria became good friends. The singer even headlined an ad shot by photographer Juergen Teller for the designer’s eponymous brand in 2008. The campaign, which featured her in a shopping bag, was then recreated by Posh Spice 10 years later for her own label.

“When Marc Jacobs featured me coming out of a shopping bag a decade ago it really was just the beginning of my journey into the fashion industry,” Victoria said in a report by W Magazine. “So what better way to illustrate the story of the past ten years than by revisiting the creative? So excited to share this campaign with you shot by the brilliant Juergen Teller.”

It looks like the best fashion collaboration—and friendship—can start with an iconic piece—even a counterfeit one.
