House Speaker Martin Romualdez and his wife will donate P1 million to the bereaved families of the two Filipinos killed in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.
Speaker Romauldez made this announcement on Thursday night, Oct. 12, as he said that the donation was out of a "gesture of solidarity and support" to the victims' families.
He said the P1 million was a "joint personal donation" with House Committee on Accounts Chairperson Tingog Party-list Rep. Yedda Marie Romualdez. Rep. Romualdez is the Speaker’s wife.
The Speaker also emphasized his commitment to find sources for livelihood opportunities and scholarships for the slain Filipinos' kin so they may be assisted in rebuilding their lives.
Earlier, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed the death of a 42-year-old man from Pampanga, who was been captured by Hamas militants; and a 33-year-old woman from Pangasinan, who was killed alongside her employer during a coordinated militant attack near the Gaza Strip.
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of our countrymen. In these trying times, it's crucial for us as a nation to come together and support one another. The donation is just a small token of our shared grief and our commitment to help," said Speaker Romualdez.
“These tragic events remind us of the dangers our fellow Filipinos face even as they seek opportunities abroad. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims during this difficult time,” he added.
The Speaker urged all Filipinos to pray for those affected by the conflict, which he hoped would end soon.
He says the Philippine government is doing everything it can to ensure the safety, welfare, and well-being of Filipinos in Israel and Gaza Strip.
