Cebu Pacific (CEB) announced that it is aiming to transition to an all-New Engine Option (NEO) fleet by 2028 in line with its sustainability initiatives.
With a NEO fleet, CEB can reduce its CO2 emissions per passenger between 17 to 29 percent, according to its 2022 Sustainability Report.
“Acquiring and maintaining next-generation aircraft is vital to meeting our climate goals and maintaining high-quality services. We have implemented a capital expenditure program to replace our older aircraft with fuel-efficient NEO aircraft by 2028,” said Cebu Pacific’s Chief Strategy Officer Alex Reyes.
CEB also seeks to transition to an all-electric zero-emission ground support equipment (GSE) fleet to ensure ground operations are also sustainable.
In addition, CEB is also cutting its fuel usage by 7.9 million kilograms in 2022 to further avoid releasing 25,059 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
CEB is the first low-cost carrier in the Southeast Asian region to use Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). SAF has been used in its operations with its new Airbus aircraft delivery flights and during the launch of its commercial flight from Singapore to Manila in 2022.
“Our effort to partner with SAF suppliers is one of the many initiatives positioning us to meet the demands of our customers for responsible and convenient air travel. It also allows us to explore opportunities to shift to more sustainable operations en route to our goal of flying net zero by 2050,” said Cebu Pacific President and Chief Commercial Officer Alexander Lao.
In 2023, CEB’s sustainable efforts will continue through partnerships with climate solutions company South Pole for mapping and reduction mechanisms of greenhouse gas emissions, carbon removal and offsetting through cooperation with carbon project developers and carbon credit providers.
Moreover, the airline is also developing its three-year partnership with the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) in training, planting, and preserving mangrove forests for the Tapon fisherfolk association in Dumanjug, Cebu, empowering them with skills in establishing, planting, and maintaining mangrove forests.
