BULUAN, Maguindanao del Sur – Defense Secretary Gilberto C. Teodoro Jr. officiated the formal surrender of 50 members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters who were presented by Maguindanao del Sur Gov. Bai Mariam Mangudadatu during a simple ceremony at the provincial capitol here on Wednesday, October 11.

The former Islamic extremists took their oath of allegiance to the government before Teodoro who warmly welcomed them to the fold of the law.
Teodoro underscored the collaboration among the local government, military, and police in forging a localized peace initiative that enticed members of the local terrorist group to return to surrender.
The surrenderers turned in 50 assorted high-powered firearms and have received livelihood assistance in return.
“This holistic approach is a testament to the government's commitment to promoting lasting peace, security, and development in the region,” Teodoro said.
The Defense chief said the localized peace initiative underlines the government's commitment to facilitating the transformation of rebels from a life of conflict into productive and peaceful coexistence.
Major Gen. Alex Rillera, 6th Infantry Division commander, said the 6th ID has been collaborating with local government units to implement a mechanism that will provide a comprehensive, inclusive, enduring, and culturally sensitive program to address violent extremism for lasting peace, security, and development.
