Kai Ballungay showed the way as defending champion Ateneo escaped University of the East, 76-69, in the first round of the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The Blue Eagles pulled away late in the game to get back on track and pick up their second win in four games.
Ballungay led the way for the Blue Eagles with a double-double effort of 18 points and 11 rebounds on an efficient 7-of-14 shooting.
Joseph Obasa and Jared Brown, for their parts, finished with 16 and 11 points, respectively.
Ateneo could barely pull away in the first three quarters and was even behind 56-54 late in the third.
However, it was the last time the Blue Eagles were left behind as they began to create some separation from the Red Warriors and even led 71-64 after Brown’s three-pointer with four minutes left in the game.
Despite UE’s fightback to keep its side afloat, Brown fired another triple with less than two minutes left, leaving the game as good as done at that point.
Ateneo also shot 25-of-34 from the line, while UE only managed to shot 1-of-4.
“I think it was not pretty but wins are what we need in this round. We have to get as many as we can and improve as a team. In the first half, we didn’t play good good defense and it was an individual letdown, just the intensity wasn’t there and we talked about that in the halftime. Fourth quarter, we really dug down deep and defend much better and much more intelligently. In the end, we got a good win for us without it being good basketball. It still was a win and it was what we need,” Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin.
It was a balanced effort for the Red Warriors as Ethan Galang, Precious Momowei and Wello Lingolingo all finished with 12 points apiece.
Momowei, though, delivered another double-double showing with 10 rebounds as UE absorbed an even 2-2 slate.
