WASHINGTON, United States–President Joe Biden will speak with US Jewish community leaders at the White House on Wednesday about the war between Israel and Hamas, officials said.
Biden will "deliver remarks on his unwavering support for Israel following the Hamas terrorist attacks, and his work to combat anti-Semitism," the White House said.
Vice President Kamala Harris's husband Douglas Emhoff, who is Jewish and has led a series of outreach events with the Jewish community, will also address the event.
Biden gave his strongest show of support yet for Israel on Tuesday when he condemned the "sheer evil" of the Palestinian militant group's attacks on Israel, which claimed 1,200 lives.
At least 14 Americans are among those killed, while an unknown number have been taken hostage by Hamas.
Biden said Israel, which has launched air strikes on Gaza that have killed more than 1,000 people, had a "duty" to take on a group whose "stated purpose is the annihilation of the State of Israel."
"This attack has brought to the surface painful memories and the scars left by a millennia of antisemitism and genocide of the Jewish people," Biden said.
The president said US authorities were increasing security at home for fear of domestic attacks linked to the Israel-Hamas conflict.
"In cities across the United States of America, police departments have stepped up security around centers... of Jewish life," Biden said.
US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan also said on Tuesday that the president would meet with his domestic security advisors later in the week.
The attacks on Israel have compounded concerns of a resurgence in anti-Semitism, far-right extremism and neo-Nazism across the United States.
In August, a US shooter was sentenced to death for the 2018 massacre of 11 Jewish worshippers at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh -- the deadliest anti-Semitic attack on American soil.
