It's a bold new take on the beloved classic. “The Color Purple,” based on the novel by Alice Walker, stars an ensemble cast that includes Taraji P. Henson, H.E.R., Halle Bailey, and Fantasia Barrino in her film debut. Produced by Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders, and Quincy Jones, the film opens in Philippine cinemas on Jan. 24, 2024. Watch the trailer: 

 

 

“The Color Purple” is a story about the extraordinary sisterhood of three women who share one unbreakable bond. This bold new take on the beloved classic is directed by Blitz Bazawule (“Black Is King,” “The Burial of Kojo”) and produced by Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders, and Quincy Jones.

The screenplay is by Marcus Gardley (“Maid,” “The Chi”), based on the novel by Alice Walker and based on the musical stage play, book (of the musical stage play) by Marsha Norman, music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray. The executive producers are Alice Walker, Rebecca Walker, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Carla Gardini, Mara Jacobs, Adam Fell, Courtenay Valenti, Sheila Walcott, and Michael Beugg.

The movie features a talented cast, including Taraji P. Henson from "What Men Want" and "Hidden Figures," Danielle Brooks from "Peacemaker" and "Orange Is the New Black," Colman Domingo from "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" and "Fear the Walking Dead," Corey Hawkins from "In the Heights" and "BlacKkKlansman," H.E.R. from "Judas and the Black Messiah" and "Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration," Halle Bailey from "The Little Mermaid" and "Grown-ish," Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor from "King Richard" and "If Beale Street Could Talk," and Fantasia Barrino in her first major motion picture appearance.
