Golden Stags defuse Heavy Bombers

San Sebastian bucked a slow start and doused Jose Rizal University's final assault to eke out a 72-59 win in the NCAA Season 99 men’s basketball tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 10, at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.

Romel Calahat, who listed 11 points, eight rebounds and two assists, led the 10-2 run of the Golden Stags which defused the last-ditch effort of the Heavy Bombers who saw their three-game win streak come to an end.

San Sebastian head coach John Kallos reminded his wards to remain composed in the face of the big JRU rally when they took a timeout.

“Actually ang sinabi ko lang, pwede tayong magkamali, tao lang tayo, but we have to move on and learn from it and wag nating ulitin,” Kallos stressed.

“Hindi na nila inulit yung pagkakamali, we capitalized the turnovers of JRU, yun lang dun lang nag-bounce back, no’ng sinabi kong wag natin ulitin yung pagkakamali," he added.

The Golden Stags had a scoring drought in the first frame and saw themselves trailing by nine early on.

However, the Recoletos-based squad sprung back to life and unleashed a 12-6 run spearheaded by Jessie Sumoda and Raymant Escobido to tie the score at 31-all before the break.

San Sebastian couldn't find any basket to start the second half, but regained the fire midway through to blow the game wide open, 55-43.

In the payoff period, Agem Miranda and Joshua Guiab connived to keep the Heavy Bombers within striking distance, but multiple turnovers proved to be too lethal to handle in the final minutes.

Sumoda topscored for San Sebastian (2-3) with 15 points while Alex Desoyo added 12.

Miranda registered 15 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals for JRU in a losing cause. Guiab backstopped him with nine while Shawn Argente added seven as the Heavy Bombers dropped to 4-2.
