Brawner retracts; confirms encounter between PH Navy, China Coast Guard

The Philippine Navy (PN) and China Coast Guard (CCG) had a brief encounter in Bajo de Masinloc (Scarborough or Panatag Shoal) on Tuesday morning, Oct. 10, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff, Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. confirmed.

This, as he clarified his prior statement that there was no PN deployment in Bajo de Masinloc and CCG was only making propaganda when it claimed that it drove away a PN gunboat in the area.

"Vinerify namin at mayroon tayong Navy ship doon sa Bajo de Masinloc pero ang mission niya is maritime patrol. Umaandar siya at ngayon nandoon ang China Coast Guard at nag-challenge. Itong Navy ship naman tuluy-tuloy lang kasi hindi naman naitaboy (We verified that we have a Navy ship in Bajo de Masinloc but its mission is for maritime patrol. It was sailing and China Coast Guard was there to challenge it. The Navy ship continued to sail and it was not driven away)," Brawner said.

The AFP Chief said the encounter happened around 9:30 a.m. He did not identify the PN gunboat involved.

Brawner insisted that the PN vessel was not driven away by the CCG, contrary to its claim.

"Ang stand pa rin natin is propaganda ng China 'yon (Our stand remains the same that it was only China's propaganda)," he said.

The CCG posted on its website a statement quoting CCG spokesperson Gan Yu that it drove away a PN gunboat after it supposedly trespassed the waters adjacent to Huangyan Island, or Bajo de Masinloc.

Brawner dismissed the CCG's remarks, saying that the PN has no deployment in Bajo de Masinloc as the force is concentrated in maritime patrols in the southern part of the country.
