Woman buried alive under tons of sugarcane

BACOLOD CITY – A woman was buried alive under tons of sugarcane when a 14-wheel truck fell on its side in Sitio Cabcab, Barangay Tabu, Ilog, Negros Occidental on Friday, September 29.

Police Major Joseph Partidas, Ilog police chief, identified the victim as Alma Claridad, 46, of Barangay Tabu.

Partidas said the victim was walking on the roadside when the right tire of the truck burst, causing the vehicle to swerve.

Claridad tried to avoid the truck but it went towards her direction, he added.

Partidas said the truck turned to its side and the sugarcane fell on the victim and trapped her underneath.

It took about an hour for rescuers to remove her.

She was taken to a hospital where she was declared dead.

The truck was loaded with 35 to 40 tons of sugarcane, according to the traffic investigator.

Partidas said the truck driver fled due to fear. The victim’s family has reached out to him and has already talked, according to Partidas.
