NPA leader among those slain in Iloilo encounter - military

The 3rd Infantry Division (3ID) of the Philippine Army (PA) identified on Sunday, Oct. 1, the three individuals slain in an armed encounter in Leon, Iloilo recently and one of them was an alleged ranking leader of the New People's Army (NPA).
Lt. Col. Jay Javines, chief of 3ID public affairs office, said Rebecca Alfaro alias Jing, was one of the casualties during a fierce clash between elements of the 61st Infantry Battalion and members of the Southern Front, Komiteng Rehiyon-Panay (SF, KR-P) in Barangay Cagay on Sept. 29.
Alfaro was described by the 3ID as the "top cadre" or "secretary" of the SF, KR-P.
Meanwhile, the 3ID added that Jimmy Macuana alias Dennis, an alleged member of Suyak Platoon, SF, KR-P; and Gerly Tejeros alias Elay, the pinpointed 2nd Deputy Secretary, Education/ Medical Staff of SF, KR-P, were also killed during the operation.
Alfaro was allegedly responsible for the series of encounters between the 3ID and SF, KR-P in Southern Panay, as well as several other criminal activities such as the liquidation of suspected civilian informants and burning of heavy equipment in Iloilo and Antique.
The 3ID said Alfaro was facing a string of criminal charges including attempted murder with the use of unlicensed firearm issued by Judge Teodulo Colada, of Branch 67 of the 6th Judicial Region; and violations of Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020 and International Humanitarian Law (IHL).
Meanwhile, the 3ID said that Elay was also charged for three counts of attempted murder, frustrated murder, and multiple attempted murder.
The 3ID, however, did not give specific details on the circumstances of the charges faced by Alfaro and Elay.
Maj. Gen. Marion Sison, commander of 3ID, said that the death of Alfaro was "a step closer to end the local communist armed conflict here in Panay Island."
"Undeniably, this particular accomplishment came to fore because everyone have done its part through our so called Whole-of-Nation Approach in fighting a common enemy. But most importantly, this happened because of the support of the local populace," he noted.
The Sept. 29 encounter occured after the 61IB responded to reports from the community that armed NPA members engaged in extortion and other criminal activities were spotted in Baranggay Cagay.
The armed engagement marked the sixth encounter between the 61IB and the NPA in Leon this year.
