HANGZHOU, China – Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association (PATAFA) President Terry Capistrano was over the moon after pole vault ace EJ Obiena ended the country’s 37-year gold medal drought at the 19th Asian Games here.

“I’m very happy that he pulled through,” said Capistrano. “Hindi ako tumalon pero I am very happy.”
“I can imagine the pressure on EJ because of all the expectations.”
What was surprising to Capistrano was how Obiena handled the pressure well.
“It seemed like a routine for him and it’s a good routine,” he said.
“Parang naging mindset na niya to win every tournament he joins.
And that’s very good.”
For now, Capistrano's advice for Obiena is to rest a lot, then after Christmas, they will talk about the Paris Olympics.
Capistrano and PSC Chairman Richard Bachmann are also hoping other PH bets will win medals of any color.
“This is not just about athletics, it’s for our campaign here in general, I hope we win more medals in the other sports. Sana madagdagan pa ang gold natin or the silver or the bronze,” added Capistrano.
For his part, Bachmann congratulated all the medalists in the first 8 days of competitions, saying: There are many faces of victory. More than these medals that are a testament to their talent and determination, let us also celebrate the achievement of all our competing athletes, and continue our support as they inspire us all with their remarkable performances.”
