300 illegal mufflers, firecrackers destroyed in Zamboanga City

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Mayor John Dalipe led the destruction of some 300 illegal mufflers and firecrackers confiscated by the police during the holiday season here on Monday, Jan. 9.

The condemned items were laid on the ground in front of the Zamboanga City Hall and destroyed by a steamroller.

The mufflers were confiscated from erring motorcycle drivers during a campaign which started from late December to the first week of January.

City Ordinance 248, this city’s traffic ordinance, bans the use of modified mufflers which produce a noise level beyond the national standard of 99 decibels.

Police also confiscated some P50,000 worth of firecrackers and pyrotechnics during the holiday season.

City Ordinance 569, the firecracker ordinance, allows an organized and professional display of pyrotechnics with a corresponding permit, but bans the unregulated use of firecrackers and pyrotechnics by civilians.
