BACOLOD CITY -- A taxi driver died after he was sideswiped by a sports utility vehicle (SUV) in front of a shopping mall in Barangay Singcang-Airport here on Saturday, Jan. 7.
Police identified the victim as Leonilo Borbon, 58, of Barangay Sum-ag here.
Major Joery Puerto, head of Police Station 8, said the victim was at the roadside when he was sideswiped by an allegedly speeding car driven by a 22-year-old college student.
Puerto said the car driver, however, did not stop, and instead sped away, while the victim was stuck on his windshield.
According to Puerto, the SUV driver claimed that he just learned about the victim when the latter fell on the ground upon reaching a gasoline station along B.S. Aquino drive, more than five kilometers away from where the accident happened.
Puerto said the car driver told the police that he felt nervous that’s why he drove away.
The car driver was arrested by personnel of Police Station 2 and was turned over to Police Station 8 for custody.
Puerto said the car driver was observed allegedly under the influence of liquor.
Puerto said the victim’s family and the car driver will meet on Monday, Jan. 9 to discuss a possible settlement.
