Mayor Tiangco backs Abalos' call for 'courtesy resignation' of PNP colonels, generals
Navotas City Mayor John Reynald “John Rey” Tiangco on Friday, Jan. 6, backed Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos’ call for Philippine National Police (PNP) senior officials to submit their “courtesy resignations” amid the national government’s intensified anti-illegal drug campaign.
Abalos called for the “courtesy resignation” of the PNP full colonels to generals in a press conference on Wednesday, Jan. 4, saying that it is part of the internal cleansing of the organization following reports of the resurgence of “ninja cops” or police personnel involved in illegal drugs.
He mentioned the arrest of a police master sergeant in Manila in October, and a chief of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency and his agents in Taguig in December, who were all allegedly involved in the selling of “shabu.”
He said the move aims to regain the trust of the people and to give justice to police officers who put their lives on the line in the campaign against illegal drugs.
“We bow to the wisdom of Sec. Abalos in asking all generals and colonels of the Philippine National Police to tender their courtesy resignation amid the 'ninja cops' issue. For sure, his pronouncement was borne out of vital intelligence reports and information that he posseses as a long-time chief executive and the current DILG chief,” Tiangco said.
Tiangco said Abalos’ call shows how serious and committed the DILG secretary is in eradicating illegal drugs.
“Cleaning house is by no means easy, but it is crucial as we strive to root out the drug problem,” the mayor said.
