CEBU CITY — The Police Regional Office-Central Visayas (PRO 7) is supporting the call of Interior and Local Government Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. for all colonels and generals of the Philippine National Police (PNP) to submit a courtesy resignation.
Brig. Gen. Jerry Bearis, director of PRO 7, said Abalos’ appeal for PNP officers to resign is an effective way of battling the illegal drug problem besetting the country.
“The PRO-7 fully supports the endeavor of Sec. Abalos to eliminate
illegal drugs in the country. The appeal to submit courtesy resignation is purposely to intensify the strong commitment of our SILG (Secretary of the Interior and Local Government) and Chief PNP to renew and win the war against illegal drugs,” said Bearis.
Abalos on Wednesday, Jan. 4, appealed to police colonels and generals to submit their courtesy resignations amid fears that some police officers are involved in the illegal drugs trade.
Abalos said a five-man committee has been formed and will review the profiles of police officers who would submit a courtesy resignation.
A police officer who submits a courtesy resignation will continue to function while the committee is reviewing the resignation, Abalos said.
Abalos described the appeal to submit a courtesy resignation as a very radical approach to solve the country’s illegal drugs problem.
“We believe that the said approach will enhance PNP organization in cleansing the ranks and further improve the operations on the grassroots level,” said Bearis.
