PAGASA: Shear line, northeast monsoon to dump rains over most of Luzon, Visayas


The rainy weather condition experienced in most parts of the country may persist until the weekend due to the effects of shear line and the northeast monsoon, also known as “amihan,” the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Thursday afternoon, Jan. 5.

“Ang minomonitor natin ngayon ay itong shear line na nakakaapekto sa Southern Luzon at Visayas (Currently, we are monitoring the shear line which is affecting Southern Luzon and Visayas),” said PAGASA Weather Specialist Veronica Torres in a public weather forecast.

Due to the shear line, cloudy skies with rains will persist in Metro Manila, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, Bicol Region, MIMAROPA, and Visayas. Residents of these areas were warned against possible flooding or landslides during heavy rains.

Apart from the shear line, another weather system may bring cloudy skies with rains in parts of Luzon. This, according to the state weather bureau, is the northeast monsoon, which is particularly affecting Cagayan Valley, Cordillera Administrative Region, and Ilocos Region.

Cold winds may likewise persist due to the northeast monsoon. As of Thursday morning, places that logged the lowest air temperatures include the following: Baguio City, Benguet (16.3°C), Malaybalay, Bukidnon (19.6°C), Basco, Batanes (19.8°C), and Tanay, Rizal (19.8°C).

24-hour rainfall

The state weather bureau, in the same public weather forecast, likewise bared the list of areas that recorded the highest amount of rainfall in the last 24-hour period.

“Mostly ito ay nasa eastern part ng bansa na naapektuhan ng low pressure area (LPA) at northeast monsoon (Mostly it is in the eastern part of the country that was affected by the low pressure area (LPA) and northeast monsoon)," said Torres.

The top three areas are as follows: Daet, Camarines Norte (120.3 mm), Infanta, Quezon (102.2 mm), and Catarman, Northern Samar (88.0 mm).
