DA orders ban on poultry products from 8 countries amid avian influenza outbreak

The Department of Agriculture (DA) has ordered an import ban on chicken and other poultry products from eight countries amid the outbreak of avian influenza.

Domestic and wild birds and their products, including poultry meat, day-old chicks, and sperm from Chinese Taipei, Ecuador, Moldova, Peru, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ireland, and Poland, are covered by the temporary ban, according to separate memorandum orders of the DA.
The agriculture department has ordered the immediate suspension of the processing, evaluation of the application, and issuance of Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) import clearance to the above-stated commodities.
The DA also directed that all shipments from the said countries be confiscated.
In the orders, Usec. Domingo Panganiban said there is a “need to prevent the entry of HPAI virus to protect the health of local poultry population.”
“ased on the official report submitted by the Director General of the Central Veterinary Administration of State Veterinary Administration, Prague, Czech Republic to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) on Dec. 1, 2022, that there was an outbreak of H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HAI) virus in Frahelz, Tábor, Jihocesky affecting birds as confirmed by the Veterinary Diagnostic Directorate (National laboratory),” one of the orders read.
The DA also cited the official report submitted by the Dr. Charlotte Vilstrup of the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration of Denmark's Ministry of Environment and Food to the WOAH on Nov. 21, 2022 that there was an outbreak of H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HAI) virus in Lundby, Slagelse affecting birds as confirmed by the Statens Serum Institut (National laboratory).
According to DA officials, the official report submitted by the Chief Veterinary Officer of the Veterinary Services of the Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine to the WOAH on Dec. 3, 2022 reported that there was an outbreak of H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HAI) virus in Clones, Monaghan.
The agriculture department also quoted the official report submitted by the Dr. Krzysztof Jazdzewski of the General Veterinary Inspectorate of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development - Poland to the WOAH on Dec. 7, 2022 stated that there was an outbreak of H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HAI) virus in Fatkowice, Namystow affecting domestic birds as confirmed by the National Veterinary Research Institute (National laboratory).
Avian influenza or bird flu is a respiratory disease of birds caused by influenza A viruses, according to the US Department of Agriculture.
