
The total number of fireworks-related injuries during the recent holiday season increased to 277 after the Department of Health (DOH) recorded 15 more cases.
The total figure was 49 percent higher than the number of cases recorded during the same period in 2021 with only 186 cases, based on the latest DOH data on Jan. 4.
The National Capital Region logged the most number of fireworks injuries with 131 and one stray bullet incident, the DOH said.
Western Visayas recorded 33 fireworks injuries, Ilocos Region with 25, Central Luzon with 23, Calabarzon with 15, and Bicol Region with 13.
Also, eight injuries were logged in Cagayan Valley, seven in Central Visayas, six in Soccsksargen, four in Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), three each in Mimaropa and Northern Mindanao, two in Davao Region, and one each in Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, and Bangsamoro Region.
Seventy-seven cases sustained eye injuries and 17 cases had blast-burn injuries with amputation. Moreover, 136 of the cases "were actively involved," the DOH said, adding that 151 cases "occurred in the street," while 115 "occurred at home."
The top fireworks involved were kwitis, boga, 5-star, and fountain, the DOH said.
No death was reported among these cases and there were no reports of fireworks ingestion, the DOH said.
