Army, OVP hold relief mission in flood-hit Surigao del Sur

The Philippine Army (PA) and the Office of Vice President (OVP) Sara Duterte teamed up to bring relief assistance to victims of flooding in Surigao del Sur, the military said Wednesday, Jan. 4.

Col. Xerxes Trinidad, Army spokesperson, said personnel of the 75th Infantry “Marauder” Battalion (75IB) distributed relief goods such as family food packs and non-food items to flood-afflicted families in the municipalities of Tago, Cagwait, and Marihatag which were inundated on Jan. 2.

The military was assisted by the personnel of the OVP satellite office in Tandag City.

“The Army leadership lauded Marauder troops and other responders for bringing much-needed supplies and for helping ease the suffering of flood-afflicted families during the holiday season,” Trinidad said.

Army units in Mindanao have assisted the national government and other stakeholders in conducting humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations for families affected by flooding during the holiday season.

Last month, a shearline brought intense rains that caused widespread floods in Mindanao which has since affected 640,000 individuals and killed 52 people.

This week, the trough of a low pressure area (LPA) also swamped parts of Mindanao that affected 5,000 individuals.
