NASUGBU, Batangas -- A 60-year-old construction worker drowned while swimming at a beach in Barangay Bucana on Sunday Jan. 1, 2023 in this town, a belated police report said The Nasugbu police identified the victim as Wilijado Cervantes, married, and a native of Barangay Binodegahan Piorduran Albay.
The victim went to the Barangay Bucana shoreline for a swim at around 10:30 in the morning of Sunday, Jan. 1.
A strong current pushed the victim to the deep portion of the beach and was unable to swim as he submerged.
Civilian rescuers who were present on the beach responded and were able to recover the unconscious body of the victim.
Rescuers tried to revive the victim but was declared dead by a team from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office.
Based on the statement of the victim's co-worker identified as Julius Alvarina, the victim had a habit of swimming in the deep portion of the sea.
Alvarina added that the victim was waiting for the resumption of their project which was scheduled to start on Jan. 3, 2023, and was staying temporarily in the barracks.
An inspection conducted by the police on the victim’s body and the place of the incident revealed that there was no foul play.
However, police had requested for a post mortem examination of the body to determine the real cause of death of the victim.
The family of the victim in Albay was already informed.
