Magnitude 4.7 quake hits Davao Occidental


An earthquake with a magnitude measuring 4.7 hit the waters off Davao Occidental around 12:23 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the seismic event was tectonic in origin, which means that it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

The quake’s epicenter was traced 18 kilometers southeast of Sarangani, Davao Occidental.

Meanwhile, the earthquake was “weak” at Intensity III in General Santos City. The following instrumental intensities were also recorded: Intensity III in Glan, Sarangani; T’Boli, General Santos City, South Cotabato; Intensity II in Talakag, Bukidnon; Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental; Malapatan, Maitum; Sarangani, Santo Niño, Tupi, South Cotabato; and Intensity I in Almada, Cotabato and Koronadal, South Cotabato.

No aftershocks and damage are expected to follow this seismic event.
