Overcast skies, scattered rain showers to prevail due to shear line, amihan – PAGASA
Most parts of the country will continue to experience cloudy skies with scattered rain showers over the next 24-hour period, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Saturday morning, Jan. 28.
The scattered rain showers and overcast skies, according to the state weather bureau, will primarily be triggered by two weather systems: the northeast monsoon, also called “amihan,” and shear line – a weather system that forms when cold and warm air masses converge.
“Patuloy pa ring umiiral ang northeast monsoon sa malaking bahagi ng Luzon. Samantala, ang shear line naman ay patuloy pa ring magdudulot ng ulan sa silangang bahagi ng Southern Luzon at Visayas (The northeast monsoon continues to affect most parts of Luzon. Meanwhile, the shear line affects the eastern section of Southern Luzon and Visayas),” said PAGASA Weather Specialist Grace Castañeda in a public weather forecast.
Shear line is particularly affecting the Bicol Region, Northern Samar, and Palawan. Residents of these areas were strongly warned against possible flash floods and landslides due to moderate to at times heavy rains.
The northeast monsoon, on the other hand, is causing cloudy skies with rains in Cagayan Valley, Cordillera Administrative Region, Aurora, Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, and Romblon. This weather system is also bringing partly cloudy to cloudy skies with light rains in Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon.
Apart from partly cloudy skies and isolated rain showers triggered by localized thunderstorms, the rest of the country may expect generally fair weather.
“Sa kasalukuyan ay wala tayong minomonitor na anumang sama ng panahon na maaaring makaapekto sa ating bansa (Currently, we are not monitoring any weather disturbance that could affect the country),” said Castañeda.
Although no tropical cyclones are expected to develop and affect the country, the state weather bureau said the northeast monsoon and shear line may continue to bring partly cloudy to cloudy skies and scattered rain showers in most parts of the Philippines over the weekend.
