22nd Ubi Festival in Tagbilaran City underway

CEBU CITY -- The provincial government of Bohol officially opened the week-long 22nd Ubi Festival at the old Tagbilaran Airport in Tagbilaran City on Friday, Jan. 27.

Spearheaded by the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA), the festival, which kicked off last Friday, Jan. 26, showcases a variety of Ubi products like ube jams and ube-based bibingka, ice cream and bread.

Ubi has become a staple food for Boholanos and also serves as a source of livelihood for farmers.

“We are glad that our provincial government through OPA was able to successfully launch this festival,” said Bohol Gov. Aris Aumentado.

“We are also glad that farmers from different towns participated in this festival,” the governor added.

The festival, which will run until Jan. 30, aims to highlight the value of the root crops to many farmers in the province.

Ube or purple yam has become Bohol’s agro-historical-geographical-religious symbol.

Being the largest producer of ubi in the country, Aumentado said the provincial government will continue to provide needed assistance to farmers to boost the province’s ubi production.

“During the festival, together with our fellow government officials, we turned over farm inputs to our beneficiaries,” Aumentado said
