8 people rushed to hospital due to alleged chlorine leak in Malabon

Eight people, including five minors, were taken to a hospital after being exposed to alleged chlorine leak at Jovares Oxygen and Gas on Kaingin St. in Tinajeros, Malabon City on Friday, Jan. 27.

The Malabon Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Office (DRRMO) identified the victims as Wendy Evangelista, 23, Arturo Bonillo, 72, Rustan Moralde, 25; and five minors — three boys aged three, four, and nine; a girl, 13; and a nine-month-old boy.

The Malabon-Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said the leakage was reported to them at 12:15 p.m. and was contained at 4:30 p.m.

The DRRMO said the patients were brought to Ospital ng Malabon (OSMAL) due to breathing difficulty.

It added that over 300 residents were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

The BFP said they are still investigating the cause of chlorine leak in water stored inside the warehouse.

Meanwhile, Malabon City Mayor Jeannie Sandoval visited the patients in OSMAL.

Sandoval said the patients experienced headache and vomiting after being exposed to leakage.

“Ang ating lokal na pamahalaan ay gagawa po ng mga hakbang para makatulong sa paggaling ng mga apektado nating kababayan. Sisiguraduhin po namin na mabibigyang aksyon ang insidente na ito sa lalong madaling panahon (Our local government will provide ways to help our patients recover. We’ll make sure to take action on the incident immediately),” the mayor added.
