ILOILO CITY – Three party-list representatives have filed a resolution calling for a probe on two substandard flyovers in Iloilo that were pet projects of former Ilonggo Sen. Franklin M. Drilon.

In House Resolution No. 2022-721, Reps. Raoul Danniel Manuel of Kabataan, Arlene Brosas of Gabriela, and France Castro of ACT-Teachers sought a legislative inquiry into the defects of the Ungka Flyover and delays on the Aganan Flyover.
“Traffic brought about by the closure of the Ungka Flyover and delayed completion of the Aganan Flyover has adverse impacts on the daily lives of commuters and jeepney drivers,” they said. “The flyovers caused hardships on residents and small businesses located near the project sites, and such hardships only aggravate while issues concerning the two flyovers remain largely unresolved,” they added.
Drilon had earlier said that the two flyovers were built to ease traffic on a major thoroughfare going to and from the Iloilo Airport and this city.
The P680-million Ungka Flyover was initially found to have problems when it was closed last September, three months after it opened in June.
Its structural integrity was questioned as cracks were found along with vertical displacement and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) discovered that the soil may not be strong enough to support the flyover.
With the discovery of the problem at the Ungka Flyover, DPWH stopped the construction of the nearby P560-million Aganan Flyover.
The two flyovers did not help ease traffic congestion and have burdened many Ilonggos for five months.
