DOH notes other protein sources amid rising egg prices

The public should consider trying other food that are rich in protein amid the recent increase in the prices of eggs, the Department of Health (DOH) said.

Getting enough protein is not only limited by eating eggs, said DOH Officer-in-Charge Maria Rosario Vergeire.

“Marami pong alternatibo katulad sa protein, we still have chicken meat, we still have yung sa isda maari natin kainin (There are many alternatives to get protein, we still have chicken meat, we still have fish that we can eat),” said Vergeire in a press briefing on Wednesday, Jan. 25.

“Marami pa pong mga alternatibo na pwedeng kainin para tayo ay manatiling malusog ang ating katawan (There are many alternatives that we can eat so that our bodies can stay healthy),” she added.

According to healthline.com, eggs are “loaded with nutrients.” Aside from protein, an egg also contains Vitamins A, B5, B12, B2, B6, D, E as well as minerals such as Calcium and Zinc. Eggs are also sources of antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids.

Meanwhile, the DOH also reminded the public to eat vegetables and fruits as these are also sources of vitamins and minerals.

“Aside from healthy diet, we do our exercise at iwasan ang mga bisyo para tayo ay magkaroon ng (and avoid vices so that we can have a) healthy lifestyle,” said Vergeire.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. already instructed the Department of Agriculture (DA) to investigate the cause of increase in egg prices.

The price of medium-sized eggs now reached P9 per piece, based on the recent monitoring of the DA. Last month, eggs only cost around P6.90.
