House bill lowering gov't optional retirement age to 56 OK'd on 2nd reading

The measure seeking to lower the optional retirement age of government employees from the current 60 years old to 56 years old has been passed on second reading in the House of Representatives.

Approved via simple voice vote during plenary session Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 25 was House Bill (HB) No.206.

Deputy Speaker and Pampanga 3rd district Rep. Aurelio "Dong" Gonzales Jr., the presiding officer, announced the bill's passage on second reading.

If enacted, the measure will amend the Government Service Insurance System Act of 1997, also known as Republic Act (RA) No.8291.

As per the measure, government workers who have rendered at least 15 years worth of service and are at least 56 years old are qualified to avail of optional retirement.

The bill was endorsed for plenary approval by the Committee on Government Enterprises and Privatization.
