Expensive wedding: Couple gives away 150 kilos of onions as party favors

CAVITE – A newlywed couple treated guests to “expensive” giveaways during their wedding reception in Tagaytay City on Tuesday, January 24. Their unusual party favors: bags of onions.

Videos and photos taken by wedding coordinator Aldrik Gohel of Moments by Ruffa show the couple, Jayson and Lorellei, standing by crates and baskets of red onions free for their guests to take home.

"Family business po kasi ng bride ang sibuyas sa San Juan, Ilocos Sur, since mahal sa market ang sibuyas, naisipan nila gawing souvenirs ito (The bride's family has an onion business in San Juan, Ilocos Sur, and since onions are expensive, they thought of giving it away as souvenirs)," Gohel told the Manila Bulletin.

A total of 150 kilograms of onions were given away during the event.

Gohel says the wedding guests were amused as they lined up to get their aromatic party favors.

"Kagulo na sila na may ngiti at masayang umuwi na may dalang sibuyas (They were excited and happy to take home the onions)," Gohel shared.

The cost of onions increased exponentially during the last quarter of 2022, hitting as high as ₱800 per kilo.
